Cmdr. ED Prendergast COMMANDER ED PRENDERGAST

Commander Ed Prendergast joined the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in 1981.  He is assigned to the Law Enforcement Services Bureau. He oversees the Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Santee and Alpine stations, and the Special Investigations Division.

As a Deputy Sheriff, Prendergast was assigned to Central Jail, Detention Training Unit, and Santee Station serving as a patrol deputy, training officer, training coordinator, and area detective.

In 1992, Prendergast was promoted to Sergeant.  He worked at El Cajon Jail, George Bailey Detention Facility, Imperial Beach Station, and Special Enforcement Detail.

In 2003, Prendergast was promoted to Lieutenant.  He was assigned to the Communications Division, Las Colinas Detention Facility, and Emergency Planning Detail.

In 2005, Prendergast was promoted to Captain.  He was assigned to Vista Station and was instrumental in developing community outreach programs and reducing the crime rate.

In 2008, Prendergast was promoted to Commander. 

Prendergast has received many honors including the Sheriff’s Medal for Valor, Deputy of Year (2 years), Sheriff's Letter of Commendation (2), Blue Knight Award, Burn Institute Award, and Rotary Club of San Diego Public Servant Hero Award.

Commander Prendergast holds a Juris Doctor from University of San Diego School of Law.  He is a member of the State Bar of California.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Urban Studies from the prestigious Columbia University in New York City.  He is a guest lecturer at University of San Diego School of Law, teaching Police Decision Making and Police Use of Force.  He also teaches Critical Incident Leadership in the P.O.S.T.
