Commander Al Skoglund joined the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in 1980.
He is assigned to the Law Enforcement Services Bureau and oversees the
Vista and San Marcos stations, Valley Center and Fallbrook substations,
Emergency Services and Licensing divisions.
As a Deputy Sheriff, Skoglund was assigned to the San Diego Central
Jail, South Bay Detention Facility, Poway Station, Ramona Substation,
Special Enforcement Detail, and San Diego Sheriff’s Training Division as a POST Basic Course
Training Officer.
In 1991, Skoglund was promoted to Sergeant and served at the
Vista Detention Facility, Special Enforcement Detail, Internal Affairs
Unit, and San Diego County Regional Training Center as a POST Basic
Course Coordinator.
In 1998, Skoglund was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the
San Diego Central Jail, George Bailey and South
Bay detention facilities as Facility Commander. In 2002, he was
assigned to the San Diego County Regional Training Center where he
served as Training Manager for the Sheriff’s In-Service Training
Program,
Regional Law Enforcement P.O.S.T. Basic Course, Director for the
Regional Training Core Instructional Group and Course Curriculum
Committee, and the Standards and Training for Corrections Basic
Course.
In 2003, Skoglund was promoted to Captain and assigned to the San
Diego Central Jail where he served as Facility Commander. He was
transferred to the Emergency Services Division where he
oversaw the operations of the Sheriff’s Aviation Unit (ASTREA), SWAT
Team, Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement Reserves, Bomb-Arson Unit, K-9
Program, and Emergency Planning Detail.
In 2006, Skoglund was promoted to Commander and assigned to the
Detention Services Bureau. He oversaw the San Diego Central Jail,
Vista and Las Colinas detention facilities, and Inmate Processing
Division. In 2008, he was transferred to the Law Enforcement
Services Bureau.
Skoglund earned a Bachelor of Science in Public
Administration/Criminal Justice and an Associate of Science in Public
Administration/Fire Sciences. He is a graduate of the Supervisory
Leadership Institute. He holds a Lifetime Community College Teaching
Credential. Prior to joining the department, he served four years
in the United States Army.
Commander Skoglund and his wife, Michelle, have four terrific children, a grandson and
two granddaughters.
