Rob Ahern joined the San Diego Sheriff’s Department in 1980 after serving four years in the United States Marine Corps. As a deputy sheriff, Rob was assigned to the Vista Detention Facility, at the Encinitas Patrol Station, and at the Special Enforcement Detail.

In November of 1992, Rob was promoted to sheriff’s sergeant and served at the Central Detention Facility before being assigned to Vista Patrol Station in March of 1994. While assigned at the Vista Station, Rob worked as a patrol sergeant, a Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) sergeant, and as the Detective Sergeant.

In September of 1997, Rob was promoted to sheriff’s lieutenant and assigned to the Central Detention Facility and later the San Diego Central Jail when it first opened. In 2001, Rob was transferred to the San Marcos Patrol Station where he served as the Field Lieutenant. In April of 2002, Rob was transferred to the COPPS Administrative Unit at Sheriff’s Headquarters.   He was responsible for managing the department’s community policing efforts as well as Crime Prevention, Crime Analysis, Volunteer Services, and Chaplaincy Services.

In April of 2003, Rob was promoted to sheriff’s captain and assigned to the Vista Detention Facility where he served as Facility Commander. In April of 2004, he was transferred to the Vista Patrol Station.  He served as the “Chief of Police” to the incorporated city of Vista as well as the unincorporated areas surrounding Vista.  In April of 2006, he was transferred to the Emergency Services Division where he oversaw the operations of the Sheriff’s Aviation Unit (ASTREA), SWAT Team, Search & Rescue, Law Enforcement Reserves, Bomb-Arson Unit and the Emergency Planning Detail.

In September of 2006, Rob was promoted to sheriff’s commander and assigned to the Law Enforcement Services Bureau.  In this capacity he oversaw the Lemon Grove Station, the Santee Station, the Imperial Beach Station, the Alpine Substation, the Rural Enforcement Division, the Emergency Services Division, and the COPPS Administrative Unit.  

In January of 2008, Rob was appointed to Assistant Sheriff and assigned to the Human Resource Services Bureau. The Human Resource Services Bureau’s sworn and professional staff looks after both the interests of the Department and the interests of the employees who comprise the Department. The Bureau consists of the Internal Affairs Unit, the Training Division, the Employee Relations Unit, the Payroll Unit, Risk Management, and the Personnel Division.

Rob currently serves on the Board of Directors of San Diego County Crime Stoppers.

Rob has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science degree in Executive Leadership from the University of San Diego.  He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police, and LEAD San Diego.
